No Structure, Poor Education

This school has no discipline structure whatsoever. The children are not sent to the Principal because he is rarely available and doesnt handle the problem even when he is available. They arent sent anywhere else either. Usually they will just put the onus on the parents immediately with a phone call. When we pulled our son out and sent him to public school we were told that they were concerned because the Riverdale transfers are always very much behind. Although public school had its typical problems, it was very nice to quit getting calls and have the school handle a typical spirited 11 year old the correct way.

A True Blessing

I don't know what these people are on. RCA is a true blessing to the Baton Rouge area. My 4 grandsons all attend RCA and the love, caring and concern of the staff and faculty is outstanding. The kids attitudes, vocabulary, demeanor and grades have all changed for the good.
Yes Mr. Whirley likes to talk to the kids to try to resolve problems, and I know my grandkids are not angles and he has done more than just talk to them.
I think the problem is with the parents who either don't want to or don't know how to parent their children or who think their kids do no wrong.

Problem Kids

There is an increasing problem with bullying at the school that is not being dealt with to my knowledge. I fear for the future children that will be attending as I can only imagine that one day a child will get so frustrated with the bullying that something bad will happen. I pray this never comes to pass and that parents take the coments on this board seriously before entering there child at this school. I also have heard about the other negative aspects posted on this site and agree with them. I just won't repost them since they were already mentioned. But they are also concerns of ours as well.

A facility with no direction or intent.

Riverdale Christian Academy, from my viewpoint, is a sorry excuse for a christian school. The children in grades 6-12 seem to carry themselves in a disorderly manner. I've walked down the halls of this school and was completely disgusted with what the children were getting away with! Some were swearing loudly and enticing other children into fights. Some were throwing food on the walls and throwing trash freely wherever they wanted to!

The bathrooms had to be the worst. I walked into the boys' bathroom and immediately caught the strongest stench of urine that I have ever smelled in my life! I don't see how the boys can use the bathroom!

I also heard that the septic tank ""malfunctioned"" due to the misuse of the restrooms.

There are not enough classrooms for all of the children and most of the 6-12 graders have one or more classrooms in the lunchroom.

Also, from what I've observed, there is a severe lack of discipline in some of the classrooms. In these classrooms, the teachers do little to control their classrooms and it severely distracts those who actually want to be in the class. From where I stand, this school has a failed system of discipline.

This concludes my review and I hope you found it helpful. I strongly recommend visiting the school and forming your own opinion on it.

Very disappointed

There website states that elementary will be learning spanish, doing science experiments etc. To my knowledge no spanish has been taught this year, and as far as science experiments go, well that is non existent. The elementary students have no art program in place. More students are being crammed in to the school constantly with out the room to accomodate them. Students in high school are taking classes in the lunchroom. I feel money is a driving factor. The teachers in elementary have little or no knowledge of childhood education and the teaching methods are certainly not sound.

God is blessing this school

Riverdale is a great little school that is growing and healthy. The school secretary, Mrs. Angie, is wonderful...she is snappy when a student is not where he/she should be or is doing something he/she should not be doing. That's called holding students accountable ;-) Since Mr. Whirley has been there as principal, the school has achieved state accreditation for the first time ever, seen record enrollment each year and is on the best financial and academic footing ever. Students must work VERY hard for their grades and will thus be well-prepared for college. This is a challenging college-prep curriculum. If you're looking for an easy ""A"", go somewhere else. God is blessing this school. Every school has a few whiner parents. Make an appointment and meet the administration and secretary face to face and judge for yourself. We love the school.

hmm.

Take it from me because i use to go there. Some of the kids are socially retarded and don't understand how to act. But we got stuck with a few bad teachers and some really good ones. Mr. Ricks was brilliant but Mr. Larry not so much. Stop bashing the place if you are just a parent because you really have no idea what goes on. Yeah it isnt a school full of really smart kids but a few teachers really care. So get over your small minded opinions and realize that no school is perfect, including riverdale. It is really an easy 4.0 if your child actually tries to do their work. Mr. Whirley was not very helpful and Mrs. Angie kinda snappy but they tried their best. I'm gone now but i had a few good memories

fair....poor.

I think that this school is a waste of hard-earned money, during the 2007/2008 school year, two teachers quit because of the students poor behavior. there are ""bullies"" by the lot. My child came home crying almost everyday because of the constant threats. The secretary is the best! The only good thing about the school. There were children enrolled at the school selling cigarettes and even ""speed"". The principal believes that
""talking"" to the kids will do all the good. But in reality it doesn't. If you have a choice, please, dont choose Riverdale.

I LOVE RIVERDALE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

I AM A VERY PROUD PARENT OF CHILDREN AGES 7 AND 16. BOTH ATTEND RCA. THEY HAVE BEEN IN ATTENDANCE FOR 3 YEARS NOW.

PLEASE USE DISCRECTION WHEN YOU READ THE REVIEW LISTED BELOW. I KNOW WITHOUT A DOUBT THE PERSON WHO WROTE THAT. SHE REAKED HAVOC ON THE SCHOOL AND STUDENTS. HER CHILD WAS ILL BEHAVED. I KNOW THAT WHEREVER SHE GOES, SHE WILL NEVER BE HAPPY.

I HAVE LEARNED AT RCA HOW IMPORTANT CONSISTANCY IS. YOU MUST HAVE STRUCTURE AND BOUDRIES FOR YOUR CHILDREN AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL. WE SHOULD ALL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR BEHAVIOR.

RIVERDALE IS A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL. THEY SHOULD NOT BE SLANDERED BY PEOPLE WHO THREW THEIR TROUBLED CHILDREN IN FOR THE SCHOOL TO FIX. IT IS NOT REFORM SCHOOL, HOWEVER I KNOW THEY MUST BELIEVE EVERYONE DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE.

I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH AT RCA. THE PRINCIPAL IS THE MOST LOVING, KIND AND MERCIFUL PERSON I KNOW. THE SCHOOL SECRETARY, WELL.............SHE IS JUST AMAZING! SHE KNOWS EVERYONE OF THE CHILDREN BY NAME. SHE KNOWS WHAT THEY WANT BEFORE THE ASK. SHE KNOWS WHEN A BANDAID IS ALL THEY NEED TO MAKE THEM FEEL BETTER, EVEN IF THERE IS NO SCRATCH. SHE HAS HAD EXPERIENCE WITH SCHOOL CHILDREN FOR UMPTEEN YEARS AND IT IS SO OBVIOUS!

AS FAR AS THE PASTOR, HE IS JUST DOING HIS JOB. TEACHING THE CHILDREN GOD'S WORD! WHEN I STARTED REINFORCING EVERYTHING TAUGHT TO THESE CHILDREN AT HOME, OUR ENTIRE LIFE CHANGED! WE ARE ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY!

UNFORTUNETLY YOU CAN NOT AND WILL NOT PLEASE EVERYONE. PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW THE BELOW STATEMENT TO CARRY ANY WEIGHT IN YOU CURIOSITY OF RCA.

AS FAR AS THE PE TEACHER ""SITUATION"", SHE HAS NO CLUE WHAT REALLY HAPPENED. I WAS THERE. THAT WAS A PERSONAL FAMILY MATTER AND WAS HANDLED ACCORDLINGLY.

I RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO SEE A DIFFERNCE IN THEIR CHILD'S RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD, THEIR PARENTS AND SIBLINGS, PEERS OR ANY OTHER HUMAN BEING!

THESE 3 YEARS AT RCA HAVE BEEN AMAZING!

One of the best private schools in town...

I enrolled my child at Riverdale the year it opened in 2001 and am completely satisfied with this awesome school. I'm know many of the families and we are a happy bunch of parents. Leave your kids in public school if you want them in a classroom where the kids run wild and no teaching takes place. If you want them in a classroom where God's love is shown, respect and order in the classroom is the norm and academic excellence is the goal, SEND THEM TO RCA. The teachers and staff are godly men and women....some of the finest people you will ever meet. Don't let one disgruntled parent spook you away from seriously considering this great little school. There is always a mom at every school who flips out if her child is punished and tries to drag everyone else down into her little spiral of misery. I bet that's the case here. This is a great school.

My opinion of this school!

I would never let my children attend this school ever again. I have so many complaints about this school's staff I don't know where to start. What makes it worse is that they are still there. Take it from me, before you send your children to Riverdale get in touch with the parents of the children that are no longer there. Call the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office for any complaints regarding the principal and staff. Call the Louisiana Board of Education and find out what letters have been sent to them. Find out why their good teacher's have left over the last 3 years. Do ALL your homework about this school. Ask about the incident with the PE coach and his son and what he did on school property. If they refuse to tell you call the news station because I'm sure they wont mind telling you. I can not tell you where to send your children but I can tell you that I would rather have my children in public school then ever send them back to Riverdale. This school was not always like this. It, at one time was a great school. Once the new principal, secretary (pastor's mother) and several teachers came into the school it has changed into something that no child should be put through. It's sad when a parent gets sick to their stomach every morning because they have drop their children off at that school so they would go ahead and let their children stay home instead of putting them in this type of invironment. Again this is just my opinion and I am talking about my situations with this school. I can not stress enough about how important it is to find out all you can about Riverdale. It could save you and your children months of agonizing stress.
