Staying organized on moving day is key, and planning is a big part of it. Keep this checklist handy before and during your move to keep things stress-free.
We've put together a small list to get you started on your journey -- and the first step starts with a single box.
I have owed these guys a review for some time as they moved us in May 2012. They are awesome! Frankly, they went above and beyond what they had to do because my husband and I underestimated the number of boxes we had by about a third. When they saw this, they called around to find one more guy to help with the move (on a Sunday) into our actual apt. as they first moved us out of our storage space in Chicago. I wouldn't have been happy, but I wouldn't have blamed them for saying that it was more than they could physically do and either walk away or take a really long time for only the two of them to do it and charge us more. They did neither of those things and only charged us extra when the extra man showed up. Needless to say we tipped them handsomely. They were fast, efficient, unfailingly polite and good-humored even though they carried some extremely heavy boxes (books and worse, my husband's 1,000+ records) up to a fifth-floor walk-up. I cannot praise them enough and I only hope that their backs are not completely broken after moving so many people because they really do work hard and are incredibly honest. They are the fourth set of movers that I have had in Chitown in less than 3 years and they are by far the BEST. I only hope that they are still in business when I move again because I really do not want to use anyone else. Thank you Kevin & Stan!
After coming out of the horrible black void of researching moving companies, contacting moving companies, waiting for responses, checking availability, and getting quotes or estimates, I finally decided to go with Fox Movers and I'm very glad I did. Why? They were extremely responsive but not harassing like some moving companies can be. They gave me a reasonable quote and time estimate, were available on relatively short notice (within a week and a half), and had no problem communicating via e-mail. I cannot stress how awesome it was that they got back to me on everything almost instantly and that I could organize this whole ordeal over e-mail. I was the first move of the morning and three movers arrived on time. They were polite and diligent. They went to work carefully disassembling any furniture that needed it and padding/wrapping other pieces. When all was said and done, the time spent moving came in about 30 minutes under what they originally quoted me. Score. Nothing was damaged, scratched, or missing. They put together anything they took apart. I even received a follow-up phone call from the office an hour or two after my move to ensure everything went smoothly and that I was happy with the job they did. I highly recommend Fox Movers and would use them again in a heartbeat. Job well done by both the movers and the office staff!
I used Concierge Moving Services this past weekend for a local move. I had previously used Bill's Movers for a past move, and Bill merged with Concierge since my last move, so I figured I'd give them a call. I was very pleased with their services. Communication was great, both from Bill, Barbara and Paul in the office to Mike, my head mover. They checked in several times to make sure everything was set. Their estimate was very reasonable, they didn't ding me on extra supplies and extras. The guys were a few minutes late, but called ahead of time to let me know, and made up the time on the back end. My movers worked quickly and were very efficient. Even the total time came in close to the estimate, 30 minutes more, but I probably under estimated my amount of stuff. The one small snafu was that a small rug did not make it off the truck, but once I realized it and called them, they personally redelivered it to my new address the next day. All and all I'd give them 5 stars, especially when considering price. If you are looking for a very reasonably priced, efficient local move, with good communication and hard working staff, these are the guys. Don't hesitate to give them a call.
I am recommending In & out moving & storage for all kind of moves because they deserve to be recommended. Just about a week ago I used In & out moving & storage for an office move. I came to know about them form a friend. He spoke highly of their service and also told me that all the people who he recommended this company for their move were very pleased. As this was an office move this involved a lot of furniture, equipment and paper work which we have been accumulation over the many years. This move has been planned into a bigger office space after fifteen years in the old building so you can well imagine we have accumulated a lot of furniture and equipment especially. Our move involved moving a lot of office desks and computers. Some of which were just recently acquired and are very expensive. I spoke to the customer service representative and she assured me that the move would carefully and care would be taken to ensure that all the equipment arrives without damage. This was exactly the outcome; a damage free move with no problem what so ever. Thank you guys, you are definitely the best in the business.
Oh boy, we were in a bind and needed to move fast. We had already set up a moving date with another company, but things fell through. We called Smooth Relocation and they were available and put together a crew immediately. I mean IMMEDIATELY! We called at 3:00 pm and the next morning at 8:30 am the crew was there at our doorstep, ready to move us. They didn't try to overcharge us due to the short notice and they were professional from the very first phone call. Their service was great and they were really thorough. They made sure we were comfortable with everything and that they would arrive when scheduled. They were really great to work with. We couldn't be more pleased with the overall service. On time, professional, and really nice guys. What really impressed us the most was a glass shelf in my china cabinet got broken and they actually took it with them and bought back a new glass shelf a few days later. Customer service is A+, We definitely would recommend this company to anyone!
Our movers names were Gabriel, Ivan and Alex. Our move was scheduled for between 8 and 8:30 and the crew was there before 7:30 to check what had to be moved. They started at 7:30 which was very helpful to us. Gabriel introduce himself and his 2 crewmen to us, then they went to work. The way they loaded the truck, I could not believe so many items could fit so neatly, compactly and safely. Next thing I knew it was loaded and we were on our way to unload. We met at my daughter's new apartment. The team unloaded as quickly and in a safe manner in unbelievable time. We have used your company, this is the 4th time and all 4 moves went smoothly, quickly, safely, nothing broken or damaged. Every crew has been spectacular and this crew was as good as the rest, if not better. When someone has good office staff and good movers, you have something to be proud of. Thank you for your professional help. Dennis, Teri, and Kelly
Normally I don’t write reviews. But after I used the Professional movers they definitely deserve one. It’s hard to find a company to handle your personal belongings and needs. When in the office speaking to Ms. Lupe all my worries referent some furniture I could not use any more, was resolved on the spot and she did everything possible to give me confidence. I get everything I asked for with in my budget. On moving day Mr. Mauro and his team Mr. Antonio and Mr. Oswaldo arrived little early. Everything was wrapped quickly, careful and fast. The total time was right on track with my estimate. They exceeded my expectations, nothing was broken and they were very friendly. - These guys are just fantastic. Definitely was worth the money and I would use them again! Thank you guys! This company made it so easy for me to move. “I highly recommend them” The Professionals really are “PROFESSIONALS”
We hired Smooth Relocation Vanlines for our move a few weeks ago. They were just amazing. Most of the times when you hire a moving company, promises are never kept. Not in the case with this company though. When I called them for a quote, they seemed very sincere and gave me a very reasonable quote. Our rep was George and he was just the best!! Their crew arrived very much on time on moving day. All four men were very sincere and skilled. I have a lot of stuff but they didn’t take a long time to finish packing everything. They were very careful while carrying big pieces of furniture out of my house and loading them to the truck. All my belongings had to travel a long way and so I was quite worried how they were going to handle with the journey, but they exceeded my expectations. Thankfully, all my stuffs traveled safely and the delivery was made right on the scheduled date.
I was sure to have some mess during the move because losing or breaking or damaging stuffs is a common practice by all movers. All I was hoping to keep the count under control. However, I did not know about In & out moving. One of my relatives recommended this company when I was looking to hire professional movers for my move to SD from IL. So, I talked with them and after receiving a very attractive offer from their sales executive Maria, I actually hired them for my move. I am really happy with their spotless performance because they moved all my stuffs very carefully and efficiently. They managed to move all my stuffs without breaking or damaging anything. It was a move, which was executed perfectly and within the given time. I am also very pleased with their price. In & out moving is quite affordable as well. I am going to use them whenever I need to move.
I have used Bernard Movers twice and also recommended them for my brother's move last week. In all three instances; their movers were prompt, effecient and hard working. I was promised three men for each job, and actually had four for one without incurring any additional charges. They also completed my move from the southwest suburbs into a 3 story row home in the city in approximately 5 hours...and that is including the driving time!!! Nothing was damaged, not even a nick or a scrape, and all boxes were put into the appropriate rooms. They even offered to set up my bed, something I would have had to do on my own. Not only did they do an excellent job with everything, you can't beat the price. I would highly recommend Bernard Movers and I already have for family and friends.
Every move is different, so it's vital to choose a moving company that's right for you. The first consideration you should make when hiring these professionals is how far you're moving.
Depending on the moving company, local moves are typically anywhere between one and 100 miles within the same state. Local moves are less complicated to plan, both for you and the movers you decide to hire. They're typically priced based on how much you need to move, how many movers the company plans to provide and how long the job is estimated to take.
Long-Distance and Interstate Moves
Even if you're staying in the same state, you may still technically be planning a long-distance move - though the exact mileage varies by moving company, these are typically moves that are more than 50 to 100 miles long or across state or country lines. In fact, even if you're moving within the same state but you have to go through another state or country first, it's likely considered an interstate move, rather than a local one. That's because the movers are technically transferring items between state lines, which means they'll be responsible for having the correct licensing and insurance in place.
Long-distance moves are much more complicated to plan, typically requiring you to pay numerous extra expenses for everything from shipping items to renting storage space.
Are you making a big move and trying to figure out exactly how much you should plan to spend? Or are you on a tight budget and looking to hire a mover who can keep costs low? Either way, it's important to understand how exactly moving companies charge their customers.
As mentioned above, for local moves, companies will charge based on the number of movers they provide and the amount of time they'll need to spend on the project. Generally, the more rooms in your apartment or house, the more movers and time you can expect to be charged for. The price of long-distance or interstate moves, on the other hand, will be based on the amount of belongings you have - and more specifically the weight of those belongings. The heavier the boxes or items you're shipping across state or country lines, the more expensive your move will be.
Moving costs will vary greatly, depending on where you are. Local moves in a small town in the Midwest will be much less expensive than comparable moves in New York City. For that reason, it's best to do some research about the going rates in your area.
No matter what type of move you're making, you can reach out to prospective moving companies for estimates - this is the best way to determine how expensive your move will be based on where you live and what services you're looking for. Typically, the moving company will send someone to your home who will do a walk through of each room, making note of the furniture, valuables and other belongings in each one. Then, he or she will provide an estimate. The exact amount you pay may, however, be different from the amount declared in the estimate. That's where the type of contract comes in.
Nonbinding vs. Binding Contracts
For any move, a company will ask you to sign a contract. It's crucial to know exactly what type of contract you're signing, though, to understand how much you can expect to pay. In basic terms, there are two types of moving contracts: binding and nonbinding. Binding, as well as binding not-to-exceed, contracts are the most preferable for people hiring movers. These list an estimated price the moving company cannot charge more than. So, even if your local move takes an hour longer or your belongings are heavier than expected for an interstate move, you're still only responsible for paying a fixed amount.
Nonbinding contracts, on the other hand, have no fixed final number. Instead, they list a rate - by the hour or by the pound/kilo - and you're responsible for paying exactly how much your move costs in those terms.
Keep in mind that movers provide a variety of services, many of which you may not require. These can affect how expensive your move will be. For example, a full-service move that includes packing and unpacking will be pricier than a local move that only includes loading the truck, driving it to the new home and unloading it.
For any move, there may be extra costs beyond the typical services offered. If you're asking your movers to transport large, hard-to-move items, like pianos, for instance, you'll likely pay an extra fee. Likewise, if your apartment building doesn't have an elevator or the truck has to be parked far from your home, you may be charged extra. Ask about these potential expenses when signing your contract.
Don't rush through the process of hiring a moving company. Make sure the movers you hire are dependable, reputable and the right fit for your needs.
Look for Reviews and Recommendations
When hiring movers, it's a good idea to both look at reviews online and ask your friends and family members for recommendations. Personal endorsements will go a long way toward helping you determine whether you can expect the company to do a quick and professional job.
Choose Top Candidates
As you're vetting candidates through reviews and recommendations, narrow your selection to three or four top options. Make sure the companies offer the type of move you're looking for, whether it's interstate or local. These three or four companies are who you'll contact for estimates.
Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions
After receiving estimates, you'll have a better idea which companies are within your budget. However, this isn't the only factor you should use when choosing movers, especially for more complicated jobs. In fact, you may be willing to pay a little more to hire quality movers who can ensure the safety of your belongings. Don't be afraid to call these companies and ask questions.
During the hiring process, you want to make sure of three things: First, that the moving company is reputable and has the proper licensing and insurance. Second, that the movers are dependable, professional and committed to doing the job correctly. Finally, that the estimate provided is binding and that you're aware of any potential excess costs. With these factors in mind, here are some of the most important questions to ask a moving company:
As with any service profession, there are certain moving companies - though they are few and far between - that aren't reputable or that will try to take advantage of you. It's important to be able to recognize a scam if you come across one.
Call the FMCSA
For long-distance or interstate moves, you can easily check that companies have the proper licensing and insurance, which is a clear indication that they're legitimate. All interstate moving companies must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, so call 888-368-7238 to confirm the licenses, insurance and credentials of the movers you're considering. The FMCSA can also tell you if any complaints have been filed against a particular moving company.
Check with the American Moving and Storage Association
For both local and long-distance moving companies, AMSA is another good place to check out a company's legitimacy. Moving companies aren't required to be an AMSA member, but the ones that are have committed to the association's rules and regulations, which protect both the companies and the consumers hiring them. If a company isn't an AMSA member, that doesn't mean it isn't reputable, but an AMSA membership is a clear indication of legitimacy.
One of the most common fears people face when moving to a new home is that something they own will be lost or damaged in the process. While no company will be able to guarantee everything arrives safely, there are steps you can take to make damage less likely.
Pack and Transport Your Valuables
If you have items that are emotionally or financially valuable to you, do your best to pack and move them yourself. Keep jewelry, expensive artwork, inherited valuables and even costly electronics in your own car - that way you'll have complete control over their safety at all times.
Choose a Moving Company That Plans Ahead
Moving companies can better keep your belongings safe when the movers plan ahead. What does this mean? Many companies take extra time to measure doorways, halls and stairways to find the safest route in and out of your home. They should also provide furniture blankets, covers and moving pads to keep both your home and your belongings free of scratches or other damage.
Keep the Moving Area Safe
There are some things you can control on moving day and some things you simply can't, such as the weather. If you're moving on a snowy, icy or rainy day, keeping all of your paths, stairways and walkways clear and dry is crucial. This can help protect both the movers and the large items they're carrying to and from the truck.
The subject of tipping is relatively unclear when it comes to movers. However, there is a general rule of thumb that most people in the industry agree on: Tip your movers if they've done a good job and you think a tip is warranted.
Generally, a 5 percent tip is considered appropriate, though some people recommend paying $20 per day, per mover for basic, local moves. However, almost everyone agrees you should first do a quick walk-through of your home to check for any damage to your furniture or belongings and to make sure everything is where you'd like it to be.
If you do decide to give a tip, divide it evenly and give money to each individual, rather than giving the entire sum to the head mover and expecting it to be doled out equally. One type of tip to avoid: alcohol. It's usually illegal for movers to have bottles of alcohol in the truck or van, so tipping a bottle of wine or liquor could get them into trouble.
